Today the VI3 is running well. Only two servers are rescheduled to run as virtual server. Nopparat can P2V the NT4 servers next week. Some downtime is needed. Documentation is delivered, so Bangkok APK can run virtual.
Monday, the good, the bad
Monday starts with the knowledge of plugin the new colored patchcables. Now you can see that the connections on a VI3 environment are important. The most machines are running well as a virtual machine.
One problem with the HA agents on esx002 is still there. All checks did not find where the problem is located. FQDN checked, hostsfiles, gateways, all OK (after changed the DNS record from exs002 in esx002 ) I decided to reinstall the server 2. Only 20 min need to a fresh server.
After the reinstall there was a strange problem: VM’s are running, but editing the virtual machine doesn’t work. Believe me: you can destroy easily a SAN VMFS by reinstalling the server with connected FC. Your local disc is the last found. Amazing that the VM’s still running and reachable by RDP. I have contacted Jan Willem Lammers from VMware. Ok, do nothing, VM’s are running because the files are locked. Only possible to P2V again a live running machine ore copy data out. Reboot will destroy the VM. We decided to roll back the old production machines. They are still there. No snapshot-software off the SAN is in use, so no recovering from snapshot is possible. Our P2V technique is improved. We wil again P2V the NT4 servers and Windows2000. Only the few Windows 2003 servers are saved from the LUN. (SQL server and Virtual Center server and w2k3 templates.)
6 new servers can be fast deployed from templates on the new installed VI3. Today the VI3 system is running fine including the HA. Also the extra dual port NICS are installed. The network is now redundant. We P2V the NT4 servers by coldboot with BartPE CD with Ghost. Move the Ghost image to a share on a Vitual server. Startup a Ghost VM with the same CD (ISO) and restore the image. Change the CD to the Coldboot CD from the VMwareconverter. Start the Ghost VM and P2V this server to the final VM. All is running on a fast server in the same ESX server. Actions are very fast: ca. 2 x 5 min for 6 Gb. After testing the server is migrated. Some servers could not P2V directly with Coldboot CD, because some servers run on a PC with 128 Mb memory. Minimum need is 280 Mb. In the Ghost VM you can install enough memory. This helper VM can be used for every image.
With new lessons learned, a new VI3 is reinstalled in 3 days. Nice training for the local IT staff (and me also). Do and don’ts.
Kabels halen in Pantip Plaza
Omdat het lastig is om een gekleurde kabel aan m’n ESX servers te krijgen, haal ik ze zelf maar. Na het paleizen avontuur, laten we ons met een andere tuktuk naar het centrum rossen. Deze jongen had echt de dag van z’n leven om ons voor 200 Bath te vervoeren. Hij wist wel de sluiproutes: via achterommetjes van garages en achterstraatjes van Bangkok. Via allerlei houthandels, waar de mensen boven wonen, kwamen bij Pantip Plaza. Dit is een soort 5 verdiepingen hoge hcc beurs. Alles op PC gebied is er te vinden. Goedkope USB memmory, printers en inkt (handig inktstation voor epson en andere printers. Via slangetjes wordt de inkt aangevoerd uit grote flessen.) Veel software en DVD’s: handig alleen maar de hoesjes: even wachten en de CD/DVD wordt geleverd! Diehard4 had ik hier net in de bios gezien, ligt al voor 200 Bath (ca 4 euro) op de plank. Waar is de BSA?
De kabels die ik zocht voor NXP waren moeilijk te vinden: overal netwerkkabels, maar van dezelfde kwaliteit als al in het datacenter: Ook homemade maar dan zonder de schoentjes die ik er normaal ook aanzet. Uiteindelijk toch gevonden wat ik zocht.in een wat betere zaak. Ik had al tegen de IT jongens gezegt: ik ga niet weg zonder een duidelijke directe patchkabel van de ESX servers naar de switch. En dan voor elk specifiek netwerk een andere kleur. Het aantal patches in een VI3 omgeving is minder, maar moet wel goed zijn.
Morgen kabels vervangen en verder met de migratie. Ik hoop dat de door mij al twee weken geleden bestelde dualport netwerkkaarten er dan ook zijn. Een beetje redundantie is ook nooit weg in een productie omgeving.
Grand Palace
Bangkok verlaten zonder het Grand Palace gezien te hebben kan natuurlijk niet. Samen met NXP collega Paul vanmiddag naar deze enorme in 1782 gebouwde verzameling van tempels en paleizen getogen. Lekker even de toerist uithangen met 32 graden celsius en een brandende zon op je kop. Het complex bestaat uit verschillende tempels en paleizen.
De gouden tempel links is de Phra Siratana Chedi, rechts daarnaast staat de Phra Mondop. De rechter toren is van de Prasat Phra Dhepbidorn (het koninklijk pantheon).
De Rajkaranyasapha hal. De efteling is er niets bij.
Thaise militaire wachten van de Chakri Maha Prasat hal zijn met kistje net zo groot als ons. Dat krijg je als je alleen maar rijst eet.
Giegelende Thaise meiden wilden de foto wel maken. Wij voor hen ook zo’n foto gemaakt. Na deze cultuur shock, nog even met de tuktuk naar de liggende Buddha. Dit is een gouden Buddha van zo’n 50 meter, liggend. Daar is dan weer een tempel omheen gebouwd. Hieromheen ook weer een keur aan andere tempels en torens. Het houdt niet op.
Wat de eerste indruk van Kaohsiung?
Om ook VMware voor NXP in Taiwan te promoten was een reis geboekt, tussen doortje. 4 uur vliegen met China Airlines.
Taiwan is een totaal ander land dan Thailand. Ze rijden er rechts, en dat doet dan weer vertrouwd aan. Heb je wel eens een paar scooters bij elkaar gezien? Over een aparte baan naast het autoverkeer rijden niet een paar, maar tientallen scooters. Getooid met een soort duitse helm op en vooral ook de mondkapjes van Michael Jackson op, racen de taiwanesen met je mee. Als je op de plaats van bestemming bent moet je natuurlijk die dingen kwijt: rijen geparkeerde scooters onder een gallerij. Elk pand heeft een eigen gallerij zodat een arcade ontstaat.
Je moet ze ook repareren, een eindje verderop een authentieke reparatiedienst:
Vanuit het hotel had ik een pachtig uitzicht over de stad. Ik zat op de 35e verdieping van dit in klassiek stijl opgetrokken hotel. Ontbijt op de 45e verdieping! Daar kijk je uit over de haven.
Onderin het gebouw zat weer een keur aan restaurants en een warenhuis. De beganegrond bestond uit Louis Fouitton, Chanel, Dior en dat soort winkels. Veel glim en marmer. Leuke tasjes en schoenen. Een Walhalla voor de meeste vrouwen. Ik kijk natuurlijk alleen naar het design van de winkelinrichting en displays 😉 . Wat een verschil tussen de straat en deze plek in de stad. Langs de straat zie elke gevel met andere materialen en vooral veel schreeuwende neonreklame. Wat een hoop chinesen zo je zo denken. Niets is te lezen natuurlijk van de karakters.
Wat drinken in de Pigs and Whistle Club, een Engelse kroeg met Hoegaarden uit de tap! Peggy tapte dat in een Hoegaarden glas van een halve liter. Kende ik ook niet. In deze club komen veel buitenlanders, zo zat ik met twee Hongkong chinesen aan de bar, handelaars in stoffen. Hier troffen we ook Barry, een aardige goser van Ingenieursburo DHV uit Amersfoort, die de bouw van waterzuiveringen moet controleren. (zat dus om de paar weken een maand in Taiwan.) Later een verdieping hoger gegaan. Hier speelde een chinese rockgroup, weer een heel andere sfeer. Na een afsluiting met zang en dans in de Crazy Horse kon de avond niet meer stuk. (Het was toch een zware dag geweest om virtualisatie te promoten) Met acrobatische kunsten van een Oekraiense en Moscowse danseres, was het een internationale avond. Je ontdekt dan ook dat het daar om 5 uur al hardstikke licht is, het is weekend. Om 8 ‘s uur avonds uur is het in Taiwan donker, in Bangkok om 7 uur! Winter hé met 30 graden.
Na een heftige dalende route door buien, een zachte landing in een regenachig Bangkok om 18:00. Ik ben weer “thuis”.
VMware demo for NXP in Kaohsiung (Taiwan)
Thursdayevening we take the plane to Kaohsiung to give a demo of VMware. This plant of NXP is really cost driven. Its a big factory in the south of Taiwan and produce automotive chips that are used in most cars we know. Andre van de Geijn and I show the IT en management what the benefits are of a virtual environment. We could connect to the VI3 environment in Bangkok, so it was possible to show VMotion. Especially the Map Ware House server (displays the map of a wafer filled with chips) we just virtualized, was very important to show.
In the afternoon I installed a ESX3 server as a testenvirionment. Placed on a 4 GB USB drive, I make a copy of a MapWareHouse Demo VM to the test ESXserver. In about 40 minutes there was a running test server. This must be an catalyst for the IT. Just connect all the new projects and deploy the needed servers on a virtual environment, there are a lot of savings. Overall you can migrate also the old servers to this platform. The most of the IT guy’s are enthusiast over what they have seen, but management is fixed on saving costs. VI3 on this site is not so easy. Some people must be convinced.
They must invest, but the benefits on long terms are huge. At the meantime we can show how we manage from Bangkok the test server and deploy new servers to test the OT environment.
Map Ware House server Migrated
Today we migrated a critical server to the new VI3 environment. This server was located on a ESX 2.5 standalone server. I have migrated this server using VMconverter. It takes only 30 min. to migrate live. Reinstall the network-settings takes another 10 min. After checking the new server, we disconnect original server from network and connect new server to public network. This is the first server with heavy workload. Now our VI3 can do something!
Big step in Asia.
P2V actions
Some P2V actions need more time than expected. Start-up problems by changed HD from IDE to SCSI. Problems with booting the VM. The UltimateP2V disc based on BartsPe has some nice features. Plugin the drivers. Start and run. When yoe have not much time to migrate like me, you must find out diverend way’s to migrate. I use VMware Converter, UltimateP2V (Mike Laverick), Cold bootCD from VMware and Leostream P2V.
Over a 100 Mb network a migration off 10 Gb takes about 30 min. When migrate a Windows2000 server, you need another 15 min to configure the network and reboots. P2V action creates a big disc with more partitions.Wen you have more time, split and copy these partitions to separate discs. I use BootIt. Works really fast.
Today 3 servers are migrated to VI3. One developmentserver must be roll-backed: PDA simulation software doesn’t work well. Connection to serial port not working. (I don’t will use it anyway, because Vmotion (and DRS) is useless).
Some P2V tips:
- Check local admin account on W2k servers. After P2V no domain is available. First the drivers must first be installed.
- Take some extra time to trouble shoot.
- Live migration of WindowsNT4 with Leostream. No reboot or downtime.
- After created the VMX file you can directly remove no necessary hardware from VM: serial ports, parallelport, etc.

Zoals je zie is tot nu toe VMware eigenlijk het meest zaaie onderdeel van het werk. Deze demo in het super de luxe centralWorld was maar een kleine greep uit het enorme aanbod van high tech spullen. Je kunt het niet bedenken, of hier staat het. HD schermen tot de grootste maat. Spul wat ze bij de Mediamarkt nog niet kennen in elk geval.
Nieuwe leasebak staat al klaar.
Als we wat moois hebben in Nederland, staan we natuurlijk wel op de juiste locatie (achter de state tower) . Ik vraag me alleen af waar je met dit moois het gas kunt opentrekken in Thailand.
