Day 4

Today de new VMware environment is running with the OT software on top. In the afternoon there was the firsts training for ATOS admins. In our project-room where we live the last days, I just show the basics of managing the environment. Different methods to access the console.

Eric, Andreas and Rudini. With Dutch Venco muntdrop we work here at NXP. A lot of work is on the whiteboard.

Some administrators had a whole new experience. Virtual disks, RAW disks, MS clustering, Vmotion, Virtual Center, HA, DRS and so on. Tomorrow I arranged the second session. VMware Cluster is not a MS Cluster. Network must be redundant and reliable. No al problems in the IT can be resolved by virtualization. If a core-switch goes down, not alone the virtual servers are not accessible.

After delivering of the documentation and P2V the virtual Center also to the VI3, the VI3 is in production. Patching and backup solutions are also available. Good moment to drink a beer.

Day 3, Pig&Whistle. Wednesday evening, all is running

    

Hier in Taiwan hebben ze het toch heel handig bekeken. Het barst van de stoplichten hier, maar dan wel met een afteller ernaast. Nu hebben we in Zwolle ook een aantal van dit soort lichten voor fietsers, maar hier op elke kruizing. Handig, want je ziet dan hoe veel seconden je nog hebt bij de volgende kruizing. Vooral taxi’s maken daar handig gebruik van, gas geven en vooral op het laatste kuispunt veel toeteren om geen scooters van de sokken te rijden die oversteken.

Maar vooral dat groene aftel display, dat bij rood weer in rode cijfers veranderd is erg simpel en handig. Kan dat niet in Nederland? Voor de rest is het verkeer overdag een redelijke chaos. Vooral met al die honderden scooters. Waar je ook kijkt, staan scooters gestald.

Day one

Monday the firsts day the check the new installed virtual infrastructure in Kaoshiung. OT engineers have had a long weekend. They installed the new test servers on a VI3, created at Friday. Lot off work! But not on the right SAN storage. The most important SQL server with a lot of drives (200 Gb – 1,5 Tb!) was created on virtual disks.

First thing to do is tell these three Israeli boys, I will removed all the snaphots and destroy the virtual disks. Backup the databases on a temporary virtual disk and remove the VMFS storage. I want to created RAW devices for each drive letter or create 4 partitions on a RAW disk. (I had only these LUN’s available). It takes several hours to move and backup data and create the new RAW disks. We decided also to created a virtual MS SQL 2005 cluster. VMware HA is nice but for this SQL server with so many databases not high available enough. 01:30 AM it was a nice time to stop and take some rest.

 

Day two 

This morning (Tuesday) we (Idan and I) create the new MS Cluster for the SQL server. I takes a while to setup the server in the engineering environment. Today Yih-Chyuan is coming over from Taipei, to reconfigure the LUNs for other RAW disks. Several other servers have also big disk I/O on SQL and disk-space for backup databases. Now all the virtual machines are OK. In the meantime I reconfigure some settings in the VI3. So on day three tomorrow, we can retest all servers again. Test? the most servers are already production test!

Next advantage for me is the P2V (migration of physical servers to virtual servers) some servers and basic training for the administrators in VMware, MS clustering, and backup procedures.

 

Het is nu twaalf uur in Kaoshiung en ik ben aangekomen in Hi Lai na een vliegreis met China Airlines via een tussenstop in Bangkok. Zaterdag vertrokken om 2.45 en aangekomen in Bangkok om 6.40. Niet veel geslapen in het vliegtuig.  Ik had er wel de ruimte voor, want een stoel bij het raam met twee lege naast me was wel een luxe.

 

Op aanraden van Leonard van de Hout heb ik het boek “De aarde is plat”van Friedman gekocht op schiphol en de eerste 180 bladzijden zijn erdoorheen. Dit boek gaat over de verkleining van de aarde door gebruik te maken van internet verbindingen en tijdsverschillen in Azië.

Doordat de internetbubble is geknapt in 2000, zijn de verbindingen voor een habbekrats overgenomen door tweede  koper, die altijd goed zit. India kreeg hierdoor de mogelijkheid de door de malaise teruggestuurde ontwikkelaars, opnieuw in te zetten, maar dan tegen lagere tarieven, voor Amerika. Daar moesten ze weg vanwege kosten, maar waren nogwel bekend en konden nu net zo makkelijk vanuit India werken.  Elk nadeel heb z’n voordeel.

Daardoor is het nu ook mogelijk dat ik nu in Taiwan een weblog kan bijhouden en bij NXP een virtuele omgeving mag neer zetten. De kennis is overdraagbaar en de omgeving kan vanuit elke vestiging worden beheerd.

Vandaag met André nog even door Bangkok gereden, nadat ik bij hem thuis even heb kunnen opfrissen. Vanuit zijn appartement heeft hij een mooi uitzicht op de skyline van de stad. Even in de keuken van een Expat gekeken. Even naar PanTip plaza (IT Walhalla) geweest. Vanuit de stad om 16.00 naar het vliegveld en om 6.40 weer verder gevlogen naar Taiwan. Ook 4 uur vliegen. Tijd om naar bed te gaan, morgen een drukke dag!

After some conference calls this week between The Netherlands, Thailand, Germany and Taiwan, today in Kaoshiung is VMware VI3 installed by IBM engineers. New test software from Optimal Test is installed on virtual machines. This weekend i fly to Taiwan to assist the NXP system engineers and finetuning the VI3, regarding the global design.
